LIVE BY NIGHT Trailer

Violent, shady men often populate the stories of Dennis Lehane, but as the trailer for Live by Night points out, they aren’t cruel. His novels and short stories has been adapted into the films Mystic River; Shutter Island; Gone, Baby, Gone; and The Drop, each of which feature sympathetic men with the potential for savageness. Live by Night looks to be in the same vein, transporting this durable archetype to the roaring twenties and the heart of organized crime.

Ben Affleck has written, directed, produced, and starred in the adaptation, returning to Lehane after his involvement as the mere co-writer and director of Gone, Baby, Gone. The dark, dangerous worlds seem to suit him (they’re even set in Boston), and the film should serve as a successful return to the directing chair.

Also sticking to the genre is frequent Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino cinematographer Robert Richardson, so it’s no wonder the trailer pops with shadow, haze, and menace. The list of impressive people who worked on this project is too long to list, but suffice it to say that nearly every role in front of and behind the camera is filled by impressive veterans.

It’s hard to imagine where this film can go wrong, and its end of year release could leave it racking up money and awards well into 2017.

Live by Night is directed by Ben Affleck and stars Affleck, Zoe Saldana, and Elle Fanning. It will be in limited release in the U.S. on December 25th, 2016 and will expand wide on January 13th, 2017. It will be released in the U.K. on January 13th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
