LAMB Trailer

A family makes a strange expansion in Lamb, the feature debut of co-writer/director Valdimar Jóhannsson.

Maria and Ingvar were eking out a comfortable life on their secluded farm in Iceland. It was tough work, but they had each other and planned to add more. The latter goal wasn’t coming easy, at least until a pregnant sheep gives birth to an unusual lamb. The couple decides to raise the creature as their own beloved child, taking them down a path that puts them at odds with the natural world around them.

It’s strange! This looks very strange, but its blend of folklore, mystery, and horror is exactly what distributor A24 loves to turn into an arthouse sensation. That bodes well for Jóhannsson’s future, who could well be following in Robert Eggers and Ari Aster’s footsteps as a breakout filmmaker for the distributor if he can pull off the high-wire walk of tension and drama the film promises.

He’s also got a great star in Noomi Rapace to help sell the film. Still the best Lisbeth Salander (I will fight you on this), she’s been bouncing around American and European films since she broke out with the Swedish The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and this looks to take her back to the brutal cold (both literal and metaphorical) that made her. Co-starring with her is the prolific Icelandic actor Hilmir Snær Guðnason.

Basically, this looks like a slam dunk, if you’re into this sort of thing.

Lamb is directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson and stars Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason. It will be released in the US on October 8th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
