Get ready for a division, because King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is directed by Guy Ritchie. I’m sure some of you have already left, siting the modernist spin and frantic energy that Ritchie injects into his films as turnoffs, while others are sitting there gleefully awaiting a good time at the theaters.
Personally, I’m hit-or-miss with Ritchie, but I do love Charlie Hunnam, so I’ll grab a chair with those of you waiting to check this film out.
Considering how many versions of the King Arthur legend already exist, putting a spin on this origin story is almost necessary to keep the audience’s attention. The last thing we need is another stodgy take on the whole sword from stone thing, which the trailer makes clear is not what we’re going to get here.
What we are getting is an action-filled movie with Arthur written as a c*cky charmer. This looks like a natural extension of Hunnam’s role in Sons of Anarchy, and he’ll be surrounded yet again with a macho cast of characters that either want to see him rise to the top or get struck down hard.
In case you were wondering about the lengthy title, the film began life as the first in a planned six-part series. Talk about further movies has since died down, and now that the film’s release has been pushed back multiple times (it was originally scheduled to release on July 22nd of this year), the future of the series is unclear.
I’m guessing that if Legend of the Sword has a rock-solid box office performance, we’ll see more of this King Arthur. If it bombs, then another version will come along in a few years.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Charlie Hunnam, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, and Jude Law. It will be released in the U.S. and the U.K. on March 24th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
