Miranda July returns to film, spinning another strange story in Kajillionaire.
Old Dolio’s never had a normal life. Her parents don’t live by the rules, and they’ve taught her to lie, cheat, and steal ever since she was little. But they always included her in their schemes, and in a way that was enough to make them feel like a functional family. At least until her parents decide a fourth person is needed for a job and they recruit Melanie to help them out. Suddenly Melanie is getting all the attention Old Dolio’s secretly wanted, and the trio begins coming apart at the seams.
All these people are adults, by the way. That plot may make it sound like Old Dolio is, well, not old, but in fact, she’s played by grown woman Evan Rachel Wood doing a distinctively deep voice. Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins are the parents who’ve withheld a lot of childhood from her, while Gina Rodriguez is the one bemusedly stumbling through their ecosystem.
That’s the kind of just off-kilter weirdness we’ve come to expect from July, whose previous two features, Me And You And Everyone We Know and The Future, each looked at the world with a c*cked head. But they had a lot of heart as well, and it looks like Kajillionaire will be doing much the same.
Kajillionaire is written and directed by Miranda July and stars Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Debra Winger, and Richard Jenkins. It is scheduled to be released in the US on September 18th, 2020. For further release dates, click here.
