One of Hollywood’s most beloved and most screwed over stars gets the biopic treatment in Judy, with Renée Zellweger taking on the titular role.
We all know and love Judy Garland. We all watched The Wizard of Oz as kids, and maybe, like me, you got your first glimpse at how truly messed up the Hollywood studio system was when someone told you about her death. Addiction stemming from a childhood of being fed uppers and downers would continuously derail her life and eventually lead to her death, but she also managed to give some unforgettable performances on screen and stage. For that we remember her and mourn her loss, and we’ll do both of those as Judy takes us through some of the final performances of her life.
The film is a big step up for director Rupert Goold, whose only previous feature, True Story, landed without any sort of splash. He somehow managed to leverage that into this attention-grabbing project; you don’t just make a film about Judy Garland, but then again, the director isn’t going to be who everyone is looking at.
No, everyone will be watching Zellweger, who takes on the icon and must either nail it or be drug through the mud for getting such a beloved figure wrong. Chicago proved that she can handle a musical, but can she handle everything that Judy was? That will make or break the film.
Judy is directed by Rupert Goold and stars Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, and Finn Wittrock. It will be released in the US on September 27th, 2019 and in the UK on October 4th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
