JOKER Trailer

The bad guy comes into focus in Joker, the latest attempt to revive the flailing DCEU.

After multiple iterations on the big and small screen, the Joker is a character that needs no introduction. His dedication to chaos and destruction makes him a striking character, and normally he is used as a counterpoint to Batman’s vigilante justice. Here, though, we are starting a littler earlier, covering the origin of the supervillain as a stand-up comedian descending into the titular psychotic persona.

Todd Phillips is the man trying to steer this ship through the rough DCEU waters, and he’s an odd choice for this gritty movie. He’s best known for comedies like Old School and The Hangover series, so this will be a major change of pace for the well-known director and co-writer. Helping with that screenplay is Scott Silver (The Fighter, The Finest Hours), who at least has a background in drama, but his career has been hit or miss overall.

The odd team behind this film doesn’t extend to the stars they got in front of the camera, though. Joaquin Phoenix is a comfortable fit for the Joker, and he should handle the character’s descent and eventual flamboyant explosions with ease. The supporting cast is also stacked, with Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, and Brian Tyree Henry.

This clean, stylish trailer gives hope to fans who have been worried about this franchise, and hopefully that enthusiasm will carry people to the film’s actual release.
