JOJO RABBIT Trailer

Nazi Germany gets taken down a peg (if you can get lower than dead) in Jojo Rabbit, the latest oddball comedy from writer/director Taika Waititi.

The titular Jojo is just a boy trying to conform and fit in to his nationalistic culture. Having already developed the less than impressive nickname of Jojo Rabbit, he’s desperate not to get any more black marks on his reputation. Unfortunately for him, his mother isn’t as enamored with Nazism, so she’s hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. This potentially devastating fact compounds Jojo’s already numerous problems, and he’s left (hilariously) questioning his place in this world altogether.

A Hitler satire may not have been the easiest pitch in Hollywood, but if anyone can pull it off it’s Waititi, who made his name on strange films like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. He’s so into this premise that he actually plays Hitler himself, or at least a friendly, comforting version of the mass murderer that Jojo has dreamed up. That, or maybe he just went wild between his Thor movies, ripping off the restraints of the MCU and going full Springtime for Hitler.

No matter what the project, Waititi can pretty much get any actor he wants, and that pull shows in the stellar cast. Scarlett JohanssonSam RockwellThomasin McKenzieRebel WilsonAlfie Allen, and Stephen Merchant all co-star, but he went with newcomer Roman Griffin Davis for Jojo. A lot is riding on that kid’s shoulders, but with the group around him, I expect everything will turn out peachy.

Jojo Rabbit is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, and Scarlett Johansson. It will be released in the US on October 18th, 2019 and in the UK on January 3rd, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
