JOCKEY Trailer

A man refuses to ride into the sunset in Jockey, the feature debut of co-writer/director Clint Bentley.

Jackson has been riding horses for a long time. Anyone with a passing knowledge of horse racing knows what that does to your body, and Jackson’s has almost hit its limit. He’s too proud to admit it, though, refusing to give up the life. That’s when two unexpected arrivals shake up his world: a horse with all the right stuff and a promising up-and-comer claiming to be his son.

Broaching such a life change is old hat for cinema, which gives a green filmmaker like Bentley lots of proven avenues to go down. It’s so familiar that the film wouldn’t stand out from the pack of releases if not for its warm reception at festivals, where it racked up strong reviews and several awards.

Much of the praise has landed on star Clifton Collins Jr., who took home the jury award for Best Actor at Sundance. He has his own long and lauded career, so it’s no surprise to hear that he knocks another role out of the park. The same could be said of his co-star Molly Parker, who has a healthy career as a character actor. Moises Arias aptly plays the up-and-comer, with his own transition from child to adult actor coming along nicely.

This is a well-worn story, there’s no denying that. But with all indications being that it’s done right, this is likely one worth checking out.

Jockey is directed by Clint Bentley and stars Clifton Collins Jr., Molly Parker, and Moises Arias. It will have a limited release in the US on December 29th, 2021. Further release dates are not currently known.
