JANE GOT A GUN Trailer

The production nightmare of Jane Got a Gun garnered more media attention than a film of its size could hope for. Acclaimed director Lynne Ramsay quit one day before shooting was scheduled to begin, leading to a cast and crew shake-up and a very public (and very nasty) lawsuit. Once the film was in the can, distributor Relativity Media pushed the release for over a year only to be delayed further by the company’s bankruptcy filing. The Weinstein Company eventually took over and the film is now getting attention for something a little less dramatic: its theatrical release.

With that history, many will approach the film on the lookout for a train wreck, but the trailer doesn’t give away any fatal flaws. In fact, it indicates a pretty traditional western steeped in violence and revenge. Yes, the hook is that it’s led by a woman, but even that’s not entirely unusual anymore.

The fact that it kept Natalie Portman on board throughout production and that it was able to cobble together a solid cast and crew at the last minute indicates that the Black Listed script might just be something special. That the trailer makes it out to be such an unremarkable western only adds to the mystery. Intrigue is high with this one, and this just might translate into a bigger audience if anyone pays attention to its low-key release.

Jane Got a Gun is directed by Gavin O’Connor. It stars Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, Ewan McGregor, Rodrigo Santoro, and Noah Emmerich. It will be released in the U.S. on January 29th, 2016. For other release dates, click here.
