IRRESISTIBLE Trailer

The political game gets lampooned by an old hat in Irresistible, the latest from writer/director Jon Stewart.

The branding of politicians and political parties has always been ludicrous, but as America has become more deeply divided these markers have only become more pronounced. What accent to adopt, whether to wear a tie or a skirt, and even what color to wear are just some of the decisions that are carefully made to attract voters, so when a veteran in middle America turns up spouting very democrat-leaning ideas, party strategists see an opportunity to win back a voting block. They set up the hometown guy to run for mayor, turning the race into a political hotbed.

From his days building the satirical program The Daily Show into a juggernaut, there’s no question that Stewart knows how to take the piss out of politics. What we don’t know is if he can form a satisfying narrative around his jokes. His previous narrative film, Rosewater, got middling reviews, but that was played straight. Perhaps returning to comedy will make him more comfortable?

His reputation certainly came in handy when casting, as Irresistible attracted some top-tier talent. I mean, who better to be the local phenom than Chris Cooper? Then there’s the rest of the cast, which includes Steve Carell and Rose Byrne as dueling strategists and Mackenzie Davis, Natasha Lyonne, and Topher Grace in unspecified roles.

On paper this seems perfect; the only thing that might hinder the fun is that pesky plot.

Irresistible is directed by Jon Stewart and stars Steve Carell, Rose Byrne, and Chris Cooper. It will be released in the US on May 29th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
