INTO THE FOREST Trailer

Before you start bemoaning the post-apocalyptic saturation of the movie world, let’s take a good, hard look at the trailer for Into the Forest. Yes, the power goes out and the grocery stores are emptied, but there’s no great battle against these events, no chosen person who must bring humanity back. Instead, there are two sisters who gather food and comfort each other as the world changes around them. It’s perhaps better to think of the film as a quiet two-hander than a sci-fi film, another in a growing line that use a science fiction premise to jumpstart a thoughtful, character driven story.
The project got started when star/producer Ellen Page was told by a store clerk that the 1996 book of the same name would make a great film. She gave it a chance and the novel sparked a passion in her, prompting her to work on developing the project. In came co-star Evan Rachel Wood (who professes a similar reaction to the script) and director Patricia Rozema, and the arduous process of getting a little indie film made was well on its way.
The presence of names like Page and Wood should help the film reach a sizable audience, but it’s important to be precise about what this film is. Playing up the sci-fi elements would give audiences the wrong impression and lead to certain disappointment. Luckily, the film was acquired by distributor A24 in the U.S., who presents us with just the kind of trailer this film should have: a low-key simmer that promises ideas much larger than can be captured in a trailer.
Into the Forest is directed by Patricia Rozema and stars Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood. It will be released in the U.S. on July 22nd, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
