Mother Nature unleashes a monster in Infinite Storm, the latest from director Malgorzata Szumowska.

Pam knew she might encounter bad weather climbing Mount Washington, but hiking cleared her head and she was experienced enough to get herself out of a bind. So when a storm grew as she climbed, she made the responsible choice to turn back. It wouldn’t have been a big deal, except she noticed a delirious, struggling man on the mountain. In a move that put herself in danger right along with him, she takes it upon herself to get them both down before the storm engulfs them.

What might seem like a straightforward survival tale likely hides complex layers, as Szumowska is a two-time Silver Berlin Bear winner for Mug and Body. There are vague hints in the trailer as to Pam’s troubled history, and there had to be something more than simply dragging a guy down the mountain to attract Reader’s Digest to publish an article on this true story.

Another good hint that there’s more to this film than snow and wind is the presence of Naomi Watts, who has been specializing of late in complex women going through the wringer. Her Pam feels of a piece with these characters, even if none of them involved dragging co-star Billy Howle down a mountain

This is unlikely to be a pleasant film, but it promises to be a thriller with a heart.

Infinite Storm is directed by Malgorzata Szumowska and stars Naomi Watts and Billy Howle. It will be released in the US on March 25, 2022. Further release dates are not currently known.
