I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS Trailer

Nothing, not even time, is as it seems in I’m Thinking of Ending Things, the latest from writer/director Charlie Kaufman.

As if visiting your partner’s parents for the first time isn’t stressful enough, imagine time simultaneously slipping out of control, going this way and that in a maddening fashion. That’s what seems to be happening to Jake’s girlfriend (who isn’t named on IMDB) in I’m Thinking of Ending Things. Oh, and as the title suggests, she also not sure if she wants the relationship to continue. So the trip should be great!

This is the kind of wonky story we expect from Kaufman, who can’t just be straightforward. There needs to be puppets or strange brain procedures or a hole into someone’s brain for him to make his point, and we love him for it. This time his twisted brain gets a boost from someone else’s, though, as the movie is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name. By all accounts, that book is strikingly weird, so this looks like a match made in heaven.

And with such an enticing filmmaker at the helm, of course, this attracted a strong cast. Jessie Buckley stars at the unsure (of a lot of things) girlfriend opposite Jesse Plemons as Jake. Jake’s parents are played by Toni Collette and David Thewlis, and there’s a bonus cute dog. What more could you want?

I’m Thinking of Ending Things is directed by Charlie Kaufman and stars Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette, and David Thewlis. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on September 4th, 2020.
