I’M NO LONGER HERE Trailer
A teen loses himself in I’m No Longer Here, the latest from writer/director Fernando Frias.
Ulises wasn’t looking for trouble. He mostly hung out with his friends and tried to avoid the chaos of the local gangs in his small town in Mexico, dancing his butt off to cumbia music whenever he could. His luck runs out when he ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time, though, getting a target on his back with one of the gangs. He’s forced to flee to New York City, where he finds himself suddenly out of synch with the culture around him.
The dreamlike quality of this trailer keeps things vague, which is actually a familiar feeling if you know Frias’ previous work. That was directing the HBO series Los Espookys, which blended hangout comedy with horror in a strangely hypnotic way. He’s done a couple of documentaries and the feature Rezeta as well, so it seems he’s can handle pretty much any project put in front of him. Getting this film released on Netflix should get his work in front of far more people.
He relied on an unknown to bring Ulises to life, with Juan Daniel Garcia Treviño starring in his first film role. It seems the rawness fits in with the milieu, though, as the film earned strong reviews out of its festival run.
I’m No Longer Here is directed by Fernando Frias and stars Juan Daniel Garcia Treviño, Xueming Angelina Chen, and Jonathan Espinoza. It will be released in the US on Netflix on May 27th, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
