I’M CHARLIE WALKER Trailer

Industry is forced to change in I’m Charlie Walker, the latest from writer/director Patrick Gilles.

Based on a true story, Walker seized an opportunity when two oil tankers collided off the coast of San Francisco in 1971. It all had to be cleaned up, preferably cheaply, and Walker was able to secure the contract. That was just the beginning of his problems, though, as no one in the industry was ready to take direction from a Black man.

This appears to be a pretty traditional biopic, which should make the return to features fairly simple for Gilles. His previous film was the 2011 family film Olive, which he co-directed with Hooman Khalili. Now he takes the reins by himself, and to his benefit, he’s found an extraordinary story and built an excellent cast.

Mike Colter, best known for playing Luke Cage on the Netflix series, stars as the titular Walker, which will continue his penchant for bouncing between the big and small screen. Co-starring with him are Dylan Baker, Safiya Fredericks, Mark Leslie Ford, Emma Caulfield Ford, and Carl Lumbly.

With a summer release, this looks to be solid counter-programming to the behemoth summer blockbusters. Hopefully, it finds an audience.

I’m Charlie Walker is directed by Patrick Gilles and stars Mike Colter, Dylan Baker, and Safiya Fredericks. It will be released in the US in theaters and on-demand on June 10th, 2022. Further release dates are not currently known.
