A pair bond over the worst idea ever in I Want You Back, the latest from director Jason Orley.
Emma and Peter met at a low point. Both had just been dumped, and their friendship blossoms from commiseration. Then Emma has a terrible idea: what if they break up their exes’ current relationships so they can get back together with them? Peter isn’t too sure but goes along with it anyway, and as they get deeper and deeper into the deceit, the pair must rely on each other even more.
It’s a messy romantic comedy for Valentine’s Day, one whose trailer doesn’t give away where this is heading but we all see the writing on the wall. That’s not a bad thing. This sort of rom-com is light comfort food, and Orley just needs to keep it steady as it navigates familiar material. That’s what he did with his debut feature, Big Time Adolescence, so he should be able to do it again.
Like that film, he’s got a cast that can give I Want You Back the pep it needs. Jenny Slate and Charlie Day star as the dumped duo, who have the perfect prickly but likable comedy personas for these messy characters. Co-starring as the new couples they’re trying to break up are Scott Eastwood, Gina Rodriguez, Manny Jacinto, and Clark Backo.
With this coming directly to Amazon Prime, it looks like the perfect movie for a holiday in.
I Want You Back is directed by Jason Orley and stars Jenny Slate, Charlie Day, Scott Eastwood, and Gina Rodriguez. It will be released in the US on Amazon Prime on February 11th, 2022. Further release dates are not currently known.
