Adam Sandler returns to serious movies and sports movies in Hustle, the latest from director Jeremiah Zagar.
Sandler plays Stanley, a long-time scout for the NBA who dreams of coaching while traveling the world to find prospective players. He usually sticks to players from established leagues, but that standard changes when he sees flashes of brilliance in a Spanish street baller. When they meets resistance back in the states, the two men must push each other to achieve their dreams within the world of basketball.
The film is going directly to Sandler’s frequent partner Netflix, but this isn’t one of the comedies churned out by his buddies. Zagar is coming off the acclaimed drama We the Animals, and Hustle itself seems to have lofty things on its mind.
Despite his reputation as a funny man, this sort of movie isn’t unusual for Sandler, who has proven himself time and again in films like Uncut Gems and Punch-Drunk Love. His co-stars give away the more serious tone as well, with Ben Foster, Queen Latifah, and Juancho Hernangomez appearing.
Anyone who may stumble into this expecting a comedy will be comforted by a whole other easily digestible genre: the sports movie. The struggling underdogs of this movie will make it easy to root for and almost sure success for Netflix.
Hustle is directed by Jeremiah Zagar and stars Adam Sandler, Juancho Hernangomez, and Queen Latifah. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on June 8th.
