HOW TO BUILD A GIRL Trailer
A young lady reinvents herself in How to Build a Girl, the latest from director Coky Giedroyc.
Johanna has a crushingly boring life. She lives with her parents in the early ’90s while trying to figure out what to do, and despite applying for writing jobs, no one seems interested in her thoughts. In an effort to revitalize her persona, she begins impersonating the rock lifestyle and actually starts selling some pieces. Suddenly her life is off to the races, but she can’t be sure if what she’s created is what she wants.
There’s more than its fair share of Almost Famous in here, what with the young music journalist getting sucked into the strange world of musicians. Still, this trailer shows off some weird flourishes, like the fact that Johanna talks to pictures of her famous idols (and they talk back). Mixing the real and the fantastical will be a difficult job for Giedroyc, but she’s got a lot of experience to build on. She hasn’t done a feature in twenty years, but she’s been working consistently on shows like Penny Dreadful and Harlots, which should set her up nicely for this material.
The lead, of course, is the instantly recognizable Beanie Feldstein, who after Booksmart and Lady Bird is stepping into the spotlight solo. Co-starring with her is Alfie Allen, Paddy Considine, and a whole raft of big names that will likely appear briefly as those fantastical photographs.
The film received strong reviews from its premiere at TIFF, and it looks like one that should play great in our stuck at home, streaming age.
How to Build a Girl is directed by Coky Giedroyc and stars Beanie Feldstein, Alfie Allen, and Paddy Considine. It will be released on VOD in the US on May 8th, 2020 and is scheduled for a UK release on July 3rd, 2020. Further release dates are not currently known.
