HOTEL ARTEMIS Trailer

There’s some rules to being a cinephile, and one of them is to perk up when you see Jodie Foster.

Returning after five years off camera, Foster headlines the action-heavy Hotel Artemis, which sees her hospital for miscreants turned upside down by a pen. The titular hotel is a front for her business, you see, and the flippantly lifted pen is actually worth millions of dollars. The rules that keep the operation viable are about to go out the window, which should really be expected when you’re dealing with criminals. But then again, you should also know not to keep your valuables hidden in the most commonly stolen office supply.

The film has a distinct John Wick vibe, promising loads of violence and a bit of underworld building. Selling this brand are action pros like Sofia Boutella and Dave Bautista, but just as many of the large cast are unusual choices for the genre. The always excellent Sterling K. Brown is the pen thief, Jeff Goldblum looks to be Goldbluming it up, and somehow Jenny Slate will fit in as well.

Methinks this won’t be as self-serious as the John Wick franchise, and that hunch is backed up by the history of writer/director Drew Pearce. He had a hand in writing more light hearted action films like Iron Man 3 and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and he makes his feature directorial debut here. That does mean those other films were churned through additional writers and directors, though, so maybe he will deliver a grittier slice of action on his own.

Either way, your time at Hotel Artemis promises to be an invigorating stay.

Hotel Artemis is directed by Drew Pearce and stars Jodie FosterSterling K. Brown, and Sofia Boutella. It will be released in the US on June 8th, 2018 and in the UK on July 20th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
