Church leaders try to rebuild in Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul, the feature debut of writer/director Adamma Ebo.

Lee-Curtis and Trinitie Childs had it all as pastor and first lady of a megachurch until scandal brought them down. Now scrambling to return to the life they knew, they bring in a documentary filmmaker to capture their planned rise from the ashes. What’s captured is their bravado, showmanship, faith, and doubts, all filtered through the c*cked eyebrow of the filmmaker.

The film is an expansion of the short of the same name from Ebo. That means she’ll be very comfortable with the satire here, which rubs against some pretty integral aspects of people’s lives. And yet a ribbing on megachurches isn’t exactly new territory (their decadence makes them easy targets), but delving into the specifics of a Black megachurch is.

Bringing the dynamic duo of Lee-Curtis and Trinitie to life is the knockout pairing of Sterling K. Brown and Regina HallBrown is best known for his more reserved work in the tv show This is Us, so it’s nice to see him let loose. For Hall, though, everything here is in her wheelhouse, from the broadness of the comedy to the mockumentary style. Granted, between Scary Movie and Support the Girls she’s proven that she can do anything. It looks like she’ll emerge as the key figure in this riches to rags to aspiring riches tale, so I’d say this comedy is in good hands.

Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul is directed by Adamma Ebo and stars Regina Hall, Sterling K. Brown, and Nicole Beharie. It will be released in the US on September 2nd, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
