HELLRAISER Trailer

Puzzles once again prove alluring in Hellraiser, the latest from director David Bruckner.

The film continues the legendary horror series where a puzzle kicks around Earth, and when someone is silly enough to solve it, the pain and pleasure of the Cenobites rain down on them. This time the puzzle falls into the hands of Riley, a young woman suffering from addiction, who now has to outmaneuver Pinhead on top of all her other problems.

The Hellraiser series is based on rather simple pleasures: gruesome violence and sexual kinks. That makes it a bit of an odd fit for Bruckner, who has built his reputation on intelligent horror films like The Ritual and The Night House. Fans of the series know what they want, and while this trailer indicates they’ll get plenty of the good stuff, Bruckner might just put a little more emotional oomph than usual behind the mayhem.

The biggest news surrounding this film was the casting of Jamie Clayton as Pinhead, marking the first time a woman has taken on the role. There was the usual amount of outrage at this change, largely coming from sexist and transphobic corners of the internet, but as many fans pointed out, in the books on which the films are based Pinhead’s gender isn’t specified. Clayton will be unleashing hell on Odessa A’zion, who plays Riley. And that’s really what matters in a Hellraiser movie: wholesome, gruesome hell.

Hellraiser is directed by David Bruckner and stars Jamie Clayton, Odessa A’zion, and Brandon Flynn. It will be released on Hulu on October 7th.
