HELLBOY Trailer

The blood red half-demon must protect Earth again in Hellboy, a reboot from director Neil Marshall.

You may remember Guillermo del Toro‘s take on the comic book character from the mid-2000s, when he wrote and directed two visually stunning films that presented the titular monster with surprising depth. He was not offered a third and the project has bounced around ever since, resulting in this completely restructured take.

The trailer makes this Hellboy (David Harbour) out to be a bit younger and more brash, indicating that the series really is getting a new stylistic stamp. There’s still plenty of monster-on-monster battling, though, as Hellboy, the magically-inclined Alice (Sasha Lane), and were-jaguar Ben (Daniel Dae Kim) must take down a sorceress intent on destroying humanity.

If this trailer struck you as violent, then you’ve picked up on one of the movie’s key changes. In turning the reigns over to Marshall, who’s best known for a little bloodbath called The Descent, the studio was making a conscious decision to up the grittiness, and he gave them the R-rated take they wanted.

Harbour, who’s taking over Hellboy from Ron Perlman, has emphasized the changes as well, so it seems everyone was at least on board for a hard right turn. Whether they all end up on the same page, and whether that page works for a half-demon questioning his place in the world, is the big question.

Hellboy is directed by Neil Marshall and stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane, and Daniel Dae Kim. It will be released in the UK on April 11th, 2019 and in the US on April 12th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
