HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U Trailer

The Groundhog Day of murder continues with Happy Death Day 2U, and unfortunately it doesn’t look like our intrepid survivor has made it very far into the future.

Capitalizing on the unexpected success of Happy Death Day, this sequel returns us to the same day sorority girl Tree Gelbman lived and died over and over again. Someone was trying to kill her, see, and it appears the time loop that allowed her to prevent her own murder has kicked back in. Oh, and someone is trying to kill both her and her friends this time, because who doesn’t like a good escalation?

Many of the major players have returned for 2U, including director Christopher Landon and stars Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard. Unfortunately, Landon has taken over writing duties from Scott Lobdell, and whether that will change the lighthearted tone that made the first so appealing will be a huge factor in whether this sequel lives up to the original.

It definitely won’t benefit from the element of surprise, which went a long way to making the first a hit. Most people were expecting a gimmicky slasher, and instead we were served a knowingly irreverent take on the premise. We’ll be expecting the humor this time, so the film will have to push itself into even more clever territory to maintain our affection.

Happy Death Day 2U is directed by Christopher Landon and stars Jessica RotheIsrael Broussard, and Suraj Sharma. It will be released in the US and the UK on February 14th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
