A mother and daughter have a violent adventure in Gunpowder Milkshake, the latest from co-writer/director Navot Papushado.
When a mission goes wrong for an assassin, she is saddled with a young girl and whole lot of enemies. It’s the perfect time for her long-estranged mother to show up and save the day, but her mother isn’t that kind of woman. Sure, she shows up, but she brings along a whole gang of violently helpful women, making their reunion into a bloodbath befitting both of their rough lives.
This female-centric action movie promises plenty of indulgent style with its girl power, which is a significant departure for Papushado. His previous films Rabies and Big Bad Wolves were horror flicks co-directed with Aharon Keshales, but I guess when the latter movie drew high praise from Quentin Tarantino, opportunities opened up. A decently budgeted action film with lots of big names attached is definitely a pivot, and it will be interesting to see how he handles the changes.
Everything in front of the camera is steady with Karen Gillan and Lena Headey headlining as the mother/daughter duo, both of whom have proven themselves in action projects. Co-starring with them is the envious lineup of Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, and Paul Giamatti. Even Chloe Coleman, who plays the girl Gillan picks up, has an impressive list of credits to her name, including the action-comedy My Spy opposite Dave Bautista.
Basically, as long as Papushado proves worthy of the praise he’s received, this should be a rollickingly good time at the movies.
