Tom Hanks takes on a swarm of U-boats in Greyhound, the latest from director Aaron Schneider.
Team-ups of German submarines (called wolfpacks) caused all sorts of problems during World War II, taking out huge convoys and making any crossing of the Atlantic treacherous. Attempts had to be made, though, to bring American soldiers to the front lines, so convoys were sent out despite the danger. When an unseasoned captain is faced with one of these masses, he holds the lives of innumerable men in his hands even though he’s not sure what to do. No pressure.
In case you didn’t know, Tom Hanks loves him some WWII history. He’s produced multiple series about the time period with buddy Steven Spielberg (and, you know, made Saving Private Ryan with him), but with Greyhound he handles the screenplay as well, adapting from the book The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester.
And of course you put Hanks’ face in front of the camera, where he plays the green captain alongside Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue. Directing this naval adventure is Schneider, which will be a big production step up from his debut, the period funeral party movie Get Low (I’m not kidding, that’s what the movie is about).
But with Hanks so deeply involved, this will undoubtedly be pitched as his baby, and none of us are complaining about a robust serving of our favorite Hollywood dude.
Greyhound is directed by Aaron Schneider and stars Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue, and Stephen Graham. It will be released in the US on June 12th, 2020 and in the UK on June 26th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
