Gotti is the long-awaited biopic about the infamous New York mobster of the same name. John Gotti (John Travolta) became widely known when he rose to the top of the underworld by becoming the boss of the Gambino crime family in the 1980s. The Gambinos were the largest Cosa Nostra crime family in the U.S. at that time.
Gotti follows the rise and fall of both John Gotti Sr. and his son John Jr. (Spencer Rocco Lofranco). As Gotti Sr. became more and more famous due to continuous attention from the New York tabloids, the ‘Teflon Don’ came under intense scrutiny from the federal government. While Gotti seemed to enjoy the media attention, many of his colleagues did not, causing a rift that proved to be fateful.
Gotti has been in development for years with high profile names such as Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci attached to star and Nick Cassavetes, Joe Johnston and Barry Levinson attached to direct at various points in its long history. In the end Kevin Connolly (perhaps best known for his role as Eric Murphy on Entourage) won out with John Travolta and Kelly Preston playing John and Victoria Gotti. Considering the talent in front of and behind the camera Gotti looks like a film that could be very good, although to be fair, that’s what people said about Black Mass two years ago, so let’s hope Gotti will deliver the goods.
Gotti is directed by Kevin Connolly and stars John Travolta, Kelly Preston and Stacy Keach. It will be released in the U.S. on December 15th, 2017 with an as of yet unknown U.K. release date. For international release dates click here.
