Children suspect the worst in Goodnight Mommy, the latest from director Matt Sobel.
Elias and Lucas were supposed to get quality time with their mom. They hadn’t seen her in a while, so the visit to her country home was going to be a chance for them to reconnect. But the mother they find there seems different in temperament and personality, and even more alarmingly she keeps her face covered at all times. In the isolated unease, the boys’ minds begin to conjure up horrifying scenarios, ones they must investigate.
This is a remake of the 2014 Austrian film of the same name, which surprised and chilled audiences worldwide. An English-language remake was almost inevitable, and the nearly ten-year gap between the original and remake may work to its advantage. The mystery and twists are what made the original so captivating, so hopefully, the time has made the particulars of this story fade in people’s minds.
That also means the blueprint is there for Sobel (whose only previous feature is 2015’s Take Me to the River), but recapturing that magic won’t be an easy task. Starring as the masked mother is horror/thriller mainstay Naomi Watts with twins Cameron Crovetti and Nicholas Crovetti co-starring as the two sons.
Goodnight Mommy is directed by Matt Sobel and stars Naomi Watts, Cameron Crovetti, and Nicholas Crovetti. It will be released on Amazon Prime on September 16th.
