GOOD TIME Trailer

There’s something strange about the trailer for Good Time, and it took me a while to figure out what it was. It’s the dichotomy of the whole presentation, the push and pull between events that seem incredibly dramatic but are presented in a low-key manner. The violence that is rampant and the desperation that lies behind Robert Pattinson’s eyes are kept at a distance, sensed but not fully felt, like those charged moments in life that inexplicably land with a dull thud.

Perhaps it’s just a poorly constructed trailer, or perhaps the movie itself isn’t as evocative as it aspires to be. Or maybe, just maybe, that sensation is an important part of Good Time. After all, the title is clearly a sarcastic jest; no one is having a good time here, and there’s allusions to time spent running towards a dream that’s not fully realized.

Precisely what is going on in Good Time remains ambiguous, and the largely unknown status of directors Ben Safdie and Joshua Safdie further the mystery. They’ve made some small films, most notably the heroin drama Heaven Knows What, but to most Good Time will serve as their introduction. They’ve got a big-name lead in Pattinson, and with a premiere this week at the Cannes Film Festival in competition for the Palme d’Or, they’re about to land on a lot of people’s radars.

Good Time is directed by Ben Safdie and Joshua Safdie. It stars Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Barkhad Abdi. It will release in the U.S. on August 11th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
