A woman goes on a sexual adventure in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, the latest from director Sophie Hyde.
Nancy hasn’t done many of the things she wants to in life. In her mid-fifties, she knows she’s nearer the end than the beginning, so she sets off to get as much done as possible. She has a list, literally, which she pulls out to review with the sex worker she’s hired. He’s not ruffled by anything she throws out, so together they work through everything she has dreamed of.
The sex life of an aging woman may be an unusual topic for movies, but the approach to the material seems to be as straightforward as you can get. This is a good old British dramedy, a smart move by documentarian turned fiction filmmaker Hyde to get people comfortable with the story.
Also helpful for selling the film is the great Emma Thompson playing Nancy. I can’t think of a better person to balance both the comedy and the pathos of the situation. Co-starring with her is Daryl McCormack as the titular sex worker Leo Grande.
The lighthearted approach and the winning nature of the two stars made this a hit during its festival run, so it should be well worth a stream when it hits Hulu later this month.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is directed by Sophie Hyde and stars Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack. It will be released in the US and the UK on June 17th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
