GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Trailer

The creatures are unleashed in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the packed sequel to 2014’s Godzilla reboot.

At least, they’re selling this film as full of combatants like Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan for the titular atomic-breathed beast, but the previous Godzilla promised much the same thing with little return. It’s true that monster movies traditionally thrive on withholding their creature, but last year’s Kong: Skull Island did away with that precedent. As the next entry in the planned MonsterVerse, King of the Monsters seems to be following Kong’s lead.

Much of this trailer features humans cowering before the monsters, either physically or mentally acquiescing to their dominance. It’s mostly a new crop of characters, with Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Vera Farmiga as the next family to deal with gargantuan creatures roaming their world. Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe return, and just maybe this will start tying all these disparate movies together. We’re staring down Godzilla vs. Kong (scheduled for a 2020 release), so they don’t have much time to get the two heavyweights headed towards each other.

Getting the bump to the big time is director and co-writer Michael Dougherty, who previously brought to life smaller creatures in Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus. Both films earned him some vocal supporters, and now he has the chance to show what he can do to a huge audience. Hopefully the buildup means he’s ready to really kick-start this middling franchise.
