FURIOUS 7 Trailer: Macho, Man

I’m going to check off a list. One D&D nerd with a chiseled body. A half Samoan, half Black former wrestler. The queen of on-screen deaths. An English chap who pretty much plays the same role over and over again except that time that he was Turkish. Add to that an R&B singer who has never won a Grammy and a rapper who has won three. Second to last is that Brazilian beauty from The Faculty. Finally, we have a dearly departed friend in his final film released posthumously. Oh, let’s not forget the cars and half-naked women. Welcome to the trailer for Furious 7.

Helmed by Saw director James Wan, Furious 7 sees the return of Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto in opposition to his English counterpart. This time around, Dom’s family is being hunted by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), the vengeful brother of Furious 6s antagonist. Now if you haven’t figured this out, this franchise has always been targeted at a certain demographic. For the purposes of this article, I will assume you’re reading this because you are part of that demographic. Let’s mention the part I personally like best, the fact that The Rock is firing a gatling gun. This is pure machismo; but the correct description would be awesome.

This is just a small sample of the action contained in the trailer. Another notable adrenaline rush is the freefall from typically 12,500 feet in the air . . . in a car. Then there’s the armored bus from which the Toretto family blows off its rear end. Further on from that point is even more machismo. By the way, do you remember when the franchise focused more on the close-knit family and illegal racing themes? Neither do I, but it’s hard to pinpoint the exact point when the Toretto family became a team of super humans that defy physics and probability. That’s not to say that there isn’t any illegal racing here, but it always feels like an afterthought and an excuse to cut to the Saudi family version of the Middle East. I’m sure you saw the girls painted in gold.

Overall, this film looks exactly like it was intended to be: an adrenaline-fueled thriller. The Furious Franchise is on its 7th film because it works and it sells tickets. The part that I found most interesting and wanted to investigate was the future of this franchise. Paul Walker‘s Brian O’Connor is going to be retired, which should be a tasteful farewell for the character. In addition, they’ve already begun talking about Furious 8.

One last thing. In an effort to add even more machismo to this film, I’ve found they added Tony Jaa, a Korean actor that is mostly known for this. All of which is physically real.

Furious 7 opens in U.S and U.K theaters on April 3rd 2015. For a list of worldwide release dates, please click here.
