FROM AFAR Trailer

The winner of 2015’s Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, From Afar creeps into theaters with some serious credentials. It wouldn’t have come this far if it didn’t, as the story of a complicated relationship between a middle-aged man and a young gang member in Caracas doesn’t exactly scream marketability. If first-time feature director Lorenzo Vigas had been peddling it on his own, it likely wouldn’t have made it out of the festival circuit, no matter how good it was. But Vigas has producers like Guillermo Arriaga, Michel Franco, and Edgar Ramírez, so the film is getting a modest theatrical release.
The trailer feels very much in line with the films that Franco has made, starkly presenting a situation that may not be pleasant to look at but is riveting in its honesty. Narrative artifice is used sparingly in these films, and even if From Afar refrains from the shocking material of Franco’s Daniel & Ana and After Lucia, it still looks to be delving into the limitless moral ambiguity that exists in the world.
This will be enough to turn many people off. The film will not be the romanticized version of anti-heroes that we have grown accustomed to, but something that cuts much closer to the bone. Not everyone wants this much reality in their cinema, but those who do may find a new director to watch in Vigas.
From Afar is directed by Lorenzo Vigas and stars Alfredo Castro and Luis Silva. It will be released in New York City on June 8th, 2016. For international release dates, click here.
