Florence Pugh takes on the wrestling world in Fighting with My Family, a story that’s loosely based on real-life WWE wrestler Paige.
Paige came from a family of professional wrestlers, but none had made it to the big stage. She and her brother dreamed of getting into the WWE as kids, and since they spent their life training and preparing, they were ready when opportunity knocked. Unfortunately only she made it through, meaning her success created a divide within the tight-knit family.
While their story hasn’t been dramatized before, it did prove its appeal in the TV documentary The Wrestlers: Fighting with My Family. Stephen Merchant, of all people, picked it up from there, marking the first time he has written and directed a feature solo. The project also has the backing (and smiling face) of Dwayne Johnson, which should provide credibility to the wrestling world.
Lady Macbeth breakout Florence Pugh stars as Paige, meaning we’ll get to see a more physical performance from her this time around. Joining her are plenty of other regulars from the British scene, including Nick Frost, Lena Headey, and Jack Lowden.
Who am I kidding, I can’t find a through line for this oddball project. A wrestling dramedy with a random assortment of performers headed by Merchant? Who knows how this thing will turn out, but I’m crossing my fingers that it’ll be a glitzy good time.
Fighting with My Family is directed by Stephen Merchant and stars Florence Pugh, Jack Lowden, and Nick Frost. It will be released in the US on February 14th, 2019 and in the UK on March 1st, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
