The family is back to drive fast cars, do international spy stuff, and generally defy physics. That’s right, it’s time for Fast & Furious 9.
Once again, the planned time off for Dom, Letty, Roman, Tej, and Mia is disturbed, this time by a mysterious brother Dom never mentioned. Turns out Dom and his brother Jakob aren’t the best of friends, so when the group’s old nemesis Cipher teams up with Jakob, their attempt at a quiet life is abruptly ended. But who wants a quiet life? We want ridiculous car stunts and Dom…catching a car mid-air?
Look, no one cares if these movies make any sense. Their ridiculousness is in their DNA, and with frequent director Justin Lin back in charge, it looks like we’re getting more of the same. I mean, they strap a rocket engine to a car. And they included that in the trailer.
The stalwarts of the cast are back as well, with Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Jordana Brewster all returning. The newcomer playing Dom’s brother is the equally beefy John Cena, who’s proved more than capable of sliding into big pieces of entertainment.
This is a series that knows exactly what it is and just keeps delivering. I see no reason to expect any else for its ninth installment.
Fast & Furious 9 is directed by Justin Lin and stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Charlize Theron, and Michelle Rodriguez. It will be released in the US and the UK on May 22nd, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
