The role of technology in the 21st century is one of the most important topics of our time, and has been reflected in many of our current films. Movies such as Her, Wall-E, Minority Report, and The Matrix all delve into the possibilities of technology-obsessed society, and Ex Machina is no exception.
Caleb, a young computer programmer, ventures deep into the forest to participate in a study of the human qualities of the incredibly life-like robot, Ava. Things don’t go as planned, of course, and the film accelerates into survival-horror territory towards the end. Ex Machina looks like a great combination of thought-provoking social commentary and cinematic excitement!
The film is written and directed by Alex Garland, writer of 28 Days Later, Dredd, and others, and stars Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac. Interestingly, Gleeson himself played a life-like artificial intelligence on an episode of the excellent British show, Black Mirror. Ex Machina looks to do what other films of the same genre have done before, but with more style and terror. Such films, from I, Robot to Her, explore the ever-blurring line between man and machine, a concept which is fading from the futuristic science fiction canon and instead becoming more prevalent in films dealing with the present day!
Ex Machina comes out on April 10, 2015 in the US, and has been in theaters in the UK since January 21. For the full list, click this link.
