Another multiverse needs saving in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the latest from the writer/director duo Daniels.
In the film, Evelyn is a struggling laundromat owner. And a chef. And an actress. And a sign twirler. She’s a lot of things because she’s been made aware of the multiverse, where versions of herself have taken wildly different paths through life. This ability was given to her because the multiverse is in danger and only a combination of skills from all her lives can save it.
Yeah, this is an odd duck, but that’s to be expected from Daniels. The sometimes team of Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (they do projects independent of each other as well) rode to indie stardom on the wet fart of a movie Swiss Army Man, which yes, was that movie where Daniel Radcliffe was a dead body who farts a lot. That loud hook belied a tender underbelly, though, so I would expect much the same depth from this MCU-riffing premise.
Even if you don’t know about Daniels, though, seeing Michelle Yeoh in front of the camera should get plenty of people excited. The venerated star gets a prime showcase here as Evelyn, playing pretty much every character known to man. She’s more than suited for the task, with the only trouble being that she seems to be facing off against Jamie Lee Curtis, a very formidable foe.
There is only one unfortunate downside to all these goodies: we’ve got a long wait until the film’s release in March.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert and stars Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu. It will be released in the US on March 25th, 2021. Further release dates are not currently known.
