Dreams will be made and shattered in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the latest from director David Dobkin.
Eurovision is one of the weirdest, most-watched events every year, with singers battling it out for pride and country in often over the top fashion. To say there’s comedy to be found would be an understatement, so of course, here comes Will Ferrell to take the piss out of the whole thing. He plays one half of an aging duo whose big dream is to represent Iceland, and when they finally get their chance, they find themselves praying they aren’t in over their heads.
This looks to be going very broad, with lots of wacky characters in silly costumes leaning into how strange the whole event is. Obviously that’s comfortable territory for Ferrell, who co-wrote this oddity with Andrew Steele, but it should play into Dobkin’s strengths as well. He handled Wedding Crashers back in the day and has done his fair share of music videos, so a comedic song competition should be cake.
The other half of the bumbling Icelandic duo is played by Rachel McAdams, who seems to be doing whatever she wants lately and doing it well. Dan Stevens and Pierce Brosnan also co-star.
This poor thing was supposed to release at the same time as this year’s Eurovision contest, but alas, the event has been canceled. Now the movie is dropping randomly on Netflix worldwide, which will have to be enough for Eurovision’s rabid fans this year.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is directed by David Dobkin and stars Will Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, and Dan Stevens. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on June 26th, 2020.
