Financial pressure pushes a woman to the brink in Emily the Criminal, the feature debut of writer/director John Patton Ford.
Emily probably would’ve lived a nondescript life if the system had given her a chance. She went to college like she was supposed to, but she was unable to find work that paid enough for her to live and get out of debt. Running out of options, she signs up for some quick money in exchange for a bit of crime. The thrill, people, and money prove too much to walk away from, though, and she gets sucked deep into the criminal world of Los Angeles.
The thrills will likely take a while to develop in this crime drama as Emily sinks into the underworld, which will give Ford lots of time to poke at a character whose stressors many will recognize. With only one short to his name, though, he’s a big unknown as the backbone of this film.
Who’s not an unknown is Aubrey Plaza, who stars as Emily. If you’ve missed her recent turns, she’s swerved recently into uncomfortable character thrillers with movies like Black Bear and Ingrid Goes West. She’s been nailing these roles, and Emily the Criminal looks like another tantalizing opportunity to see her spread her wings. Co-starring with her is Theo Rossi, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Gina Gershon.
Emily the Criminal is directed by John Patton Ford and stars Aubrey Plaza, Theo Rossi, Megalyn Echikunwoke, and Gina Gershon. It will be released in the US on August 12th, 2022. Further release dates aren’t currently known.
