EMA Trailer

Dancing gets very serious in Ema, the latest from co-writer/director Pablo Larraín.
Ema usually dances for fun, expression, and as a job, but when her life is turned upside down it takes on a new, desperate energy. She and her partner Gaston had adopted a son but proved incapable of raising of the boy. Guilt and shame take over after the loss, causing Ema to jettison Gaston as well and try to take back control of her life.
The film continues Larraín’s strange path through cinema, which most people know for his impressionistic deep dive into Mrs. Kennedy’s mental state after her husband’s assassination in Jackie. Ema looks to one-up just how experimental he can be (but it doesn’t challenge that accent) by relying on the title character’s immersion in dance to work through her flurry of emotions.
Frequent collaborator Gael García Bernal (they also made No and Neruda together) stars as the discarded husband who’s also the choreographer where Ema works. Ema herself is played by Chilean actress Mariana Di Girólamo, who will need to master body movement as acting to pull off this challenging role.
If all of that isn’t exciting enough for you, there’s also some arson in this expressive mix. What more could you want?
Ema is directed by Pablo Larraín and stars Mariana Di Girólamo and Gael García Bernal. It will be released in the US on August 13th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
