Short after completing the shoots The Drop in June 2013, legendary actor James Gandolfini sadly passed away. In a few months’ time, we will finally see his last appearance in film. The Drop is directed by Michaël R. Roskam, and alongside Gandolfini, the movie stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Matthias Schoenaerts. The story and screenplay was written by Dennis Lehane, famous for his novels and films Shutter Island and Mystic River.
The Drop tells the story of Bob Saginowski (Hardy), a lonely bartender in a local New York City bar. He’s witness to the local organized crime using bars as their money-laundering “drops”. Under the heavy hand of his cousin and employer Marv (Gandolfini), Bob finds himself in the center of a robbery gone wrong and an investigation that uproots the entire neighborhood. When one night, Bob finds a different kind of “drop”, one in the shape of a battered pit bull puppy, he comes into contact with a mysterious woman named Nadia.
I’m pretty fascinated by this trailer and the story’s premise. I’m not entirely sure how the puppy or Nadia tie into the organized crime and robbery gone awry plots just yet, but I have to admit it looks promising. Previous film adaptations of Lehane‘s work have been great; in this instance, however, Lehane penned the screenplay himself, and I’m curious to see how that worked out.
Belgian director Roskam is fairly inexperienced, aside from a few short films, his only other full-length feature is the Belgian 2011 film Bullhead. It will be interesting to see how he’s directed the experienced cast!
The Drop is scheduled for release on September 21, 2014 in the U.S. and on November 14 in the U.K. For the release date in your country, look here.
