DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA Trailer

It’s time to titter at the Crawley’s once again in Downton Abbey: A New Era, because apparently this story never stops.
It’s hard to overstate how big Downton Abbey was in the early 2010s. TV is rarely a cultural phenomenon anymore, so when the seemingly unremarkable upstairs/downstairs drama became a household name, everyone was shocked. Even now it’s hard to put your finger on why it, of all things, became so popular. Was it the low-stakes drama? The fastidious wealth? The Britishness of it all? Yes, yes, and yes, and while its freshness has worn off, the machinery of such a well-oiled machine still delights.
This time the Crawley’s and their staff are up to two separate adventures. At home, the always forward-thinking Lady Mary has allowed a film crew into Downton, which should provide a nice bit of cash for the perpetually struggling family. But will they wreck the place? The suspense! Meanwhile, some of the family take a trip to France, where a mysterious person from the Dowager Countess’ past has gifted her a villa. Scandal? Probably.
A New Era, just like the series and the 2019 movie, was written by Julian Fellowes, so this will be the Downton we know and love. Most of the cast returns as well, including Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, and Joanne Froggatt. New additions to the world include Dominic West, Laura Haddock, and Hugh Dancy.
Simon Curtis takes the helm, which the Woman in Gold director is more than capable of doing. His job is simply to not mess this up, and if I could put in a personal request, to not break my heart with that dog (RIP Isis).
Downton Abbey: A New Era is directed by Simon Curtis and stars Maggie Smith’s attitude. It will be released in the UK on April 29th, 2022 and in the US on May 20th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
