The MCU enters a new world in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the latest from director Sam Raimi.

After unleashing a mess while helping out Spider-Man, Doctor Strange decides to enter the multiverse to deal with the problem. He can’t do it alone, though, so along comes his mentor, Wong, disgraced Avenger Wanda Maximoff, and newcomer America Chavez. Together, they must confront alternate versions of themselves, some of whom are even more destructive than they are.

With largely returning players from the sprawling MCU, the cast of Multiverse of Madness features plenty of familiar faces. Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, and Benedict Wong are back as Strange, Wanda, and Wong, respectively, while Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams reprise their roles from the first Doctor Strange movie. The only major newcomer here is Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, who’s poised for a breakout after starring in Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club.

Launching into the multiverse opens the MCU up not only to visual feasts (which you see plenty of in this trailer) but to weirdness feasts, which partially explain the presence of Raimi. The man is known for stylish, often bizarre swings like The Evil Dead and the original Spider-Man trilogy, the latter of which did much to establish modern superhero films. Now circling back to the genre, he’s taking on one that seems, even more, attune to strengths. The only concern is can he make it fit into the MCU?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, and Benedict Wong. It will be released in the US and the UK on May 6th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
