DOCTOR SLEEP Trailer

A legend is expanded in Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining.

You may remember that little Stanley Kubrick adaptation from the ’80s, and you may remember the displeasure author Stephen King had with the many liberties Kubrick took. Well, that bad taste didn’t stop King from revisiting one of his most famous worlds for a 2013 sequel, nor did it stop him from allowing a film adaptation yet again. Doctor Sleep appears to be adhering to Kubrick’s adaptation, though, and how it will balance the differences between the film and book legacies will be an interesting thing to puzzle over until its release. In the meantime, we do know that the film seems to be sticking to the basic premise of the book: Dan Torrence is now an adult, and he must help a young girl with similar abilities evade a mysterious group looking to feed on her energy.

The man in the unenviable position of picking up where Kubrick left off is Mike Flanagan, who wrote as well as directed this adaptation. Those who follow horror know that Flanagan (Oculus, Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House) is one of the best genre directors around, though, which revives hope that this won’t be a letdown in comparison.

He’s got a great cast to work with as well, with the adult Dan being played by Ewan McGregor and a supporting cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay, and Bruce Greenwood. The only real question mark here is Kyliegh Curran, who will play the little girl McGregor is trying to protect. This is only her second film, and it appears she’s in a key role. Still, with so many great people assembled for this adaptation, it’s possible that Doctor Sleep will be able to hold its own against its renowned predecessor.

Doctor Sleep is directed by Mike Flanagan and stars Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, and Kyliegh Curran. It will be released in the UK on October 31st, 2019 and in the US on November 8th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
