DEMONIC Trailer

Be careful what you bring out in Demonic, the latest from writer/director Neill Blomkamp.

Information about the plot has been scarce so far, but the trailer appears to show a woman using some serious brain tech to enter a world separate from our own. Somehow this leads the woman to her mother, who she’s been at odds with for some time, and the supernatural source of their separation is not only revealed but unleashed into the real world.

As I said, the plot is being kept under tight wraps, but for most people, the plot isn’t really the selling point. Many will be happy just to see Blomkamp return to the big screen, whose bomb, Chappie, has kept him away for more than five years. The memory of his striking debut, District 9, is enough to keep people on his side, though, even as he puts some distance between himself and the science fiction genre he’s most associated with.

This appears to lean much more into horror, a genre that is a bit more suited for pandemic times. That’s right, this is a movie shot under COVID circumstances, so expect some economical work from Blomkamp. He certainly kept the cast list down, with just a handful of actors listed on the movie’s IMDB page and with Carly Pope, Nathalie Boltt, and Chris William Martin starring.

So expect a measured return from Blomkamp, but considering how creative he’s proven to be, that doesn’t mean it won’t satisfy.

Demonic is directed by Neill Blomkamp and stars Carly Pope, Nathalie Boltt, and Chris William Martin. It will be released in the US and the UK on August 20th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
