DEEP WATER Trailer

Intrigue abounds in Deep Water, the latest from director Adrian Lyne.

The relationship between Vic and Melinda Van Allen survives on an understanding. They aren’t happy together, so Melinda openly sees other men, which allows them to endure. But when Melinda’s partners go missing, suspicion naturally falls on Vic.

Yes, the intrigue of an open relationship is old-fashioned, but it’s there because the movie is based on a 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. You know Highsmith, or at least you know her stories, which have been adapted into the movies Strangers on a TrainThe Talented Mr. Ripley, and Carol. This has all of her best-known elements: mystery, sex, murder. Basically, all the good stuff.

The fun thing about this adaptation is that revives the erotic thriller, which had its time in the ’90s and sadly faded. Prominent among that trend was Fatal Attraction, so naturally, they got that film’s director, Adrian Lyne, to bring the genre back.

And yes, there’s another intrigue as well, but I won’t go into real-life messiness. The film stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Google it if you want.

This is one of the last COVID-delayed film releases, with a years-long waiting period after filming that we hopefully won’t see again. That’s why I wouldn’t be too alarmed by its bump from a theatrical to a Hulu release. This thing needed to come out sometime, and erotic thrillers simply drawing people into theaters right now. So enjoy this at home, if that’s what you’re into.

Deep Water is directed by Adrian Lyne and stars Ben Affleck, Ana de Armas, and Tracy Letts. It will be released on Hulu on March 18th, 2022.
