DEAR EVAN HANSEN Trailer

A teenager takes a very ill-advised route to coming out of his shell in Dear Evan Hansen, an adaptation of the acclaimed musical.
Evan has social anxiety, and deep into high school, he finds himself with few friends and without an outlet. His therapist recommends writing a positive letter to himself each day, and when a classmate he barely knows takes one and runs off with it, he gets sucked into a no-win situation. His classmate dies by suicide and his parents mistake the letter he stole as evidence that he and Evan were friends. Not wanting to hurt the grieving family, he doesn’t correct their mistake, and suddenly Evan finds himself in the middle of the community’s tragedy.
As if that plot wasn’t already a minefield, don’t forget that this is also a musical. But hey, this somehow worked on Broadway, taking home numerous Tony Awards including Best Musical. Trying to make sure it translates to the big screen is screenwriter Steven Levenson and director Stephen Chbosky. Considering Levenson wrote the book for the stage musical and Chbosky previously made the excellent high school movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, it seems like they got a great duo for the job.
Staying on from the stage musical is lead Ben Platt, so he should get this story’s strange charm as well. Other main roles have been filled out by big movie stars like Julianne Moore and Amy Adams and rising stars like Kaitlyn Dever and Amandla Stenberg. Their presence is a good indication of what this adaptation is expected to be: a high-profile, prestigious picture. Hopefully, it can clear that high bar.
Dear Evan Hansen is directed by Stephen Chbosky and stars Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, and Amandla Stenberg. It will be released in the US on September 24th, 2001, and in the UK on October 22nd, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
