Cryptozoo (2021)- source: Magnolia Pictures

Get weird as only animation can with Cryptozoo, the latest from writer/director Dash Shaw.

The movie imagines a zoo not for regular animals but for cryptids, fanciful creatures like Sasquatch and Chupacabra whose existence are not proven scientifically but in this world are very much alive. Also unlike a regular zoo, this one is closed to the public, the existence of the magical collection kept hidden for their own safety. But when the cryptozookeepers go searching for a new addition, they begin to wonder whether opening things up would allow them to do even more for the creatures they love.

Shaw broke onto the scene with his inventive and highly stylized feature My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea, and it doesn’t look like he’s backing away from his strange style. This is animation for adults that goes to weird, whimsical, deep places, this time with all sorts of strange animals to feast your eyes upon.

The voice cast is its own top-notch assembly, with Lake Bell playing a longtime keeper of cryptids and Michael Cera, Angeliki Papoulia, and Louisa Krause also lending their vocal talent.

This promises to be a strange one, but that’s exactly what you should expect from one of the rising stars of American animation.

Cryptozoo is directed by Dash Shaw and features the voices of Lake Bell, Michael Cera, Angeliki Papoulia, and Louisa Krause. It will be released in the US on August 20th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
