CRY MACHO Trailer

Clint Eastwood sticks to the hits in Cry Macho, which features the venerable Hollywood staple as both director and star.

Don’t stop me if you’ve heard this one before, because you definitely have. Eastwood plays a washed up rodeo star whose glory days are long behind him. With debts and regrets piled up, he takes on the thankless job of bringing an old boss’ son home. On the long journey the gruff man is softened by the brash familiarity of the young man, and his efforts to help him avoid the same mistakes he made provides some modicum of redemption.

A familiar story is to be expected from Eastwood, who loves to dip into old-school styles that no one else of his stature makes anymore. The result is that his films are at once familiar and refreshing, existing in many ways as a dichotomy. Are they interrogating conventions or leaning into them? Are they progressive or regressive? Most often, the answer is yes, all of the above.

Still, Eastwood’s films will always attract an audience, and it’s hard to accuse him of being on cruise control. Now in his ’90s and putting out films at a rate that puts pretty everyone else to shame, the man clearly loves movies, and that enthusiasm always charmingly shines through.

Cry Macho is directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Eastwood, Eduardo Minett, and Dwight Yoakam. It will be released in the US on September 17th, 2021, and in the UK on November 12th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
