The alligators are coming in Crawl, the latest from director Alexandre Aja.
Real talk: I love a bad creature movie, and Crawl looks like it could be an awesomely bad creature movie. While it has a pretty contained premise (a hurricane brings gators into a father and daughter’s home), you know this will bring on some silly scenarios. In many ways, this looks a lot like the surprise hit from a few summers ago, The Shallows, which gave Blake Lively’s intrepid shark victim a seagull buddy to pass the time. I doubt we’ll get anything that wacky here, but I’m hoping to giggle through most of Crawl.
Bringing the gator flick to the big screen in horror veteran Aja, who’s probably best known for his remake The Hills Have Eyes. More relevant, though, is his experience with the underwater comedy/horror Piranha 3D, which should be a nice warm-up for this gators vs. humans showdown.
Representing humanity will be The Maze Runner’s Kaya Scodelario and he’s-been-in-everything character actor (including The Maze Runner series) Barry Pepper. I’m not sure there’s much prep for the actors in this case, but here’s hoping they studied Jon Voight in Anaconda to learn from the best. Actually, I hope everyone involved watched Anaconda as prep, because that’s the kind of movie I want this to be.
Crawl is directed by Alexandre Aja and stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper. It will be released in the US on July 12th, 2019 and in the UK on August 9th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
