COMPARTMENT NO. 6 Trailer

A woman takes a life-altering journey in Compartment No. 6, the latest from writer/director Juho Kuosmanen.

Laura, a Finnish transplant, has been in Moscow for a while. Feeling unsettled and needing to get away from a dwindling romance, she books a train trip to the port city of Murmansk. Her compartment mate isn’t ideal; he’s a loud, space vacuum of a guy, but as the train lumbers its way across the country, it becomes clear that the frequent stops and this strange man is just what Laura needs to get out of her funk.

The film has racked up some impressive accolades during its festival run, including premiering at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and tying with Asghar Farhadi’s A Hero for the Grand Prix. Unsurprisingly, it was selected by Finland as its entry to the Best International Feature category at the Oscars, making the shortlist.

Kuosmanen’s previous film, The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Maki, had a similarly strong reception, but it hasn’t translated into widespread name recognition for the writer/director. Perhaps if Compartment lands an Oscar nomination this will change?

Also key to the film’s success is the performances of Seidi Haarla as Laura and Yuriy Borisov as her compartment mate. Much of the film will revolve around them bouncing off each other in cramped quarters, so it’s unsurprising that they’ve been receiving acclaim along with Kuosmanen and the film as a whole.

This is getting a slow rollout, but it might be a gem worth waiting for.

Compartment No. 6 is directed by Juho Kuosmanen and stars Seidi Haarla and Yuriy Borisov. It will begin its US release in NYC/LA on January 26th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
